![]() Fighting high AC opponents, it can be tough to get the initial hit that delivers the stunning strike that gives you Advantage on everything moving forward, so it might be nice to have something that can help with that. monks get stunning strike as an ability at 5th-level. Precision is one you might consider as well. 1 I was poring over the higher level (6+) spells last night, trying to plan ahead which would make for a good choice for my sorcerer's repertoire, and I stumbled over power word: stun. Normally a successful stun will deny the enemy at least one full Attack action. ![]() Riposte is definitely good, but your stuns are actually a bit less useful if you're using them after the monster has already gotten an attack off. As a practical matter, I don’t know if this feels cool or interesting. It also doesn’t do anything to help out the table, unlike stunning strike. Maneuvering Attack has a similar problem, in that you can already deny reactions or knock monsters away with your flurries. Downside: most fights are relatively short (3-5 rounds), and I’m not sure if, e.g., +2 to attack/damage and +2 to AC is remotely as powerful as the ability to stun an opponent. PHB page 79: Starting at 5th level, you can interfere with the flow of ki in an opponents body. By the end of the turn, you have spent 5 of your 9 total Ki for being 9th level. Open Hand Only triggers off the 2 Flurry strikes, no ki cost or action economy. Flurry 2 more attacks, costs 1 ki and your bonus action. You already have the ability to Disengage as a bonus action, and you can use flurry of blows to knock an enemy back or just flat deny reactions- with all that in place I don't think Evasive Footwork adds enough to be worth the opportunity cost. Stunning strike does not say you do not do damage. Attack action basic attack + Extra Attack. Be aware though that stunning fist is one of the monks key abilities if you nerf it too much you might worry about monks remaining effective. If you feel like constructs and undead should be, then you can certainly houserule it. ![]() I feel like mobility stuff might have diminishing returns. I would not have expected a lot of monsters to be immune to stun. , 12:22 PM (ISO 8601) Spoilers - Top - End - 1 stoutstien Firbolg in the Playground Join Date Sep 2015 Location Maine Gender Mercy monk: hand of harm flurry of blows/stunning strike I initially skipped over the mercy monk when I read through tasha's. I personally prefer Menacing but I can see arguments either way. Goading, if you're going to be doing it at range, the big difference is that while Goading will work on creatures immune to fear, it doesn't have the Menacing effect of not allowing them to close distance. You knock his sword out of his hands, then knock him away with your flurry, then pick up his dropped sword and walk off very neat. I like Disarming Attack a lot for an Open Palm Monk. ![]()
